As posted on Use This Keyboard App to Create and Send GIFs
iOS/Android: Are you a fan of swipe-friendly keyboards on your smartphone? Then you’ve probably heard of Google’s Gboard, the third-party keyboard that lets you both swipe to spell as well as search the web. With the latest update, you can create GIFs from the keyboard using your smartphone camera, and send them wherever animated images go to be appreciated.
How to Record and Save GIFs
To bring up the GIF creation tool, open the app in which you’d like to post your GIF (or at least an app where you can use Gboard). Bring up the keyboard and, before you type anything, hit the GIF icon in the Gboard menu bar above your keyboard. That will launch Gboard’s GIF maker. You can create two kinds of GIFs using Gboard—looping and fast-forward GIFs—and save them for later if you like them.
To create a GIF, hold your finger on the shutter button until you’re done recording. You can then save the animation to your camera roll or copy and paste it into whichever app you’re using.
Gboard isn’t the only keyboard that makes GIFs easily accessible, but it is one of the few that lets you make your own without having to exit your app of choice. Is it the ultimate form of narcissism, to create a looping image of your own visage to send to your friends and family who are no doubt already aware of what you look like when you’re in motion? Maybe. But it’s also pretty easy to do, and puts you one step closer to being part of society’s repository of animated reaction images.
